The canal connects the River Aisne, 15 kilometres east of Soissons to the Canal des Ardennes in the west. Along its 51 kilometre length it has junctions with the Canal de l'Aisne à la Marne at Berry-au-Bac and the Canal de l'Oise à l'Aisne at Bourg-en-Comin.
The distance stones show the number of kilometres from the Canal des Ardennes.
When the canal joins the River Aisne the distance markers continue and these also show the distance to Paris therefore the distance markers count up to the entire length of the latéral and the river, a total distance of 257 kilometres.
