Distance Markers: Macclesfield Canal

The milestones measure the distances from Marple at the northern end on one side of the stone and Hall Green at the southern end on the other side of the stone.  The sum of the two distances is 26.25 miles.

The mileposts were buried during WWII so as not to give anything away to invading troops!  They have mostly been found and restored with new ones made to replace those that couldn't be found.  There is controversy over the new one at Marple as historians maintain there would never have been one at the 0/26.25 mark.

There are also smaller stones marking each 1/4 mile point and the majority of these are also still present.
