We have only been on the southern end of this river where it is canalised from its start at Cambrai. When the river runs though Belgium and Holland it is known as the Scheldt and empties into the North Sea opposite the Thames estuary 355 kilometres from Cambrai. We only travelled for six kilometres on the canalised section and saw one distance stone showing we were five kilometres from Cambrai.
